President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned the newly refurbished Crude Distillation Unit at the Tema Oil Refinery.
The landmark ceremony on Saturday, August 1, 2026, marked a major turnaround for the strategic state owned refinery. The facility successfully processed one million barrels of indigenous Jubilee Field Medium Sweet Crude oil into finished petroleum products.
The Crude Distillation Unit operates as the primary processing engine of an oil refinery. It separates raw crude oil into essential components like gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas before further refining occurs.
Addressing factory workers and dignitaries, President Mahama commended the management, board, and staff of the refinery for achieving this comeback. He emphasized that the entire rehabilitation project happened without a single cedi from the central government treasury.
The successful revival of the refinery proves that state owned enterprises can thrive when managed with strong vision and accountability. By refining local crude oil on home soil, Ghana takes a giant leap toward national energy security and reduces heavy reliance on expensive imported fuels.
Managing Director Edmond Kombat confirmed that the refinery paid fully for the Ghanaian crude cargo. The facility is now set to support local industrial growth and create sustainable technical jobs for Ghanaian workers.
