President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana Airways will return to the skies before the end of his term in office.
The President made the statement on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, while delivering an address at the Russian University of Transport in Moscow, where he received an honorary doctorate.
President Mahama said his government was working to revive Ghana’s former national airline, which ceased operations in 2004.
“And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline, which is the defunct Ghana Airways. And as I said, it’s my hope that before I leave office, we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” he said.
Government Plans to Revive National Airline
The proposed revival of Ghana Airways forms part of efforts to establish a national carrier capable of supporting air travel, tourism, trade and economic development.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has previously provided updates on work towards establishing a national airline, including the submission of a report by a technical committee set up to examine the proposal.
Discussions have also been reported with aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of the preparations.
Although the government has expressed its intention to revive the national airline, key details concerning its ownership, fleet, financing and launch date will need to be confirmed before operations can begin.
Mahama Highlights Transport Infrastructure
During his address in Moscow, President Mahama also highlighted the importance of transport infrastructure in Ghana’s economic development.
He discussed developments in road construction, ports, airports and railway transportation, noting the role these sectors play in connecting communities, facilitating trade and supporting businesses.
The government’s Big Push programme is among the initiatives aimed at improving road infrastructure across the country.
The President also highlighted plans to expand aviation infrastructure and develop the railway network as part of efforts to improve transportation and strengthen economic links.
He further called for greater cooperation between Ghanaian institutions and the Russian University of Transport in areas such as railway engineering, logistics, road safety and transport management.
Ghana Airways Revival
Ghana Airways stopped operating in 2004 following years of financial difficulties. Since its collapse, successive governments have explored ways to establish a national airline for Ghana.
President Mahama’s latest statement reflects his hope that the former national carrier can return to operation before his tenure ends.
However, the revival will depend on the completion of the necessary planning, financing and operational arrangements. The government is yet to provide all the details needed to confirm when the airline will resume flights.
