Ghanaians seeking stronger public safety and better intelligence coordination across the country can now breathe a sign of relief. President John Dramani Mahama has approved a major reorganization of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), making six high-profile appointments and reassignments with immediate effect.
The official announcement came in a formal statement released on Tuesday evening, August 11, 2026, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
Government officials explained that these structural changes will strengthen operational workflows, eliminate administrative bottlenecks, and enhance proactive intelligence gathering to protect national borders and local communities.
Key Appointments To Strengthen Intelligence Operations
Under the new administrative framework, retired Major General William Ayamdo assumes duty as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations. Major General Ayamdo brings vast tactical experience to the post, having served as Ghana’s Chief of Army Staff from February 2017 until his retirement in February 2020.
In another major move, former National Security Coordinator Yaw Donkor takes over as Director of Intelligence and Research within the Office of the National Security Advisor. Mr Donkor previously led the national security architecture during President Mahama’s first tenure from 2014 to 2017.
Additional appointments to key specialized divisions within the Secretariat include:
- Mr Adamu Saaka: Appointed as Director of Logistics and Transport to streamline mobility and equipment deployment.
- Ms Faustina Effah-Boadi: Takes charge as Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department to address non-military public safety concerns.
- DCOP (Rtd) Peter Ndekugri: Appointed as Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit to handle high-profile security inquiries.
- ACP Alhassan Osman: Reassigned back to the Ghana Police Service command structure for strategic redeployment.
Reorganization Aligns With Modern Security Legislation
This administrative overhaul follows four months after President Mahama assented to the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168). The landmark legislation revamped Ghana’s security governance framework by abolishing the former Office of the Minister of National Security to streamline command channels.
Ghana’s current national security structure continues under the leadership of Prosper Bani as National Security Advisor and COP Abdul-Osman Razak as National Security Coordinator, both of whom assumed office in January 2025.
These strategic reassignments align seasoned military and law enforcement veterans with modern legal frameworks, reassuring citizens that state security apparatus remains agile, focused, and equipped to deal with emerging safety threats.
