The political temperature across the country has risen significantly following sharp statements concerning national accountability. President John Dramani Mahama has publicly questioned the continuous absence of the former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, from the jurisdiction.

The President argued that any public official who genuinely believes their hands are entirely clean should have no reason to hide in a foreign country. This high-profile demand for answers has renewed the fierce national debate regarding the financial management of state resources over the past few years.

President Mahama unboxed the details of the ongoing legal battle during a lively Citizens Engagement forum held at the Ho Technical University. The open community interaction formed a major part of his official Resetting Ghana Tour across the Volta Region.

The President explained that bringing the former finance boss back to Accra depends heavily on complex international legal frameworks rather than raw political desire. The Attorney General’s Department has officially initiated formal extradition proceedings by submitting the first batch of required applications to authorities in the United States, where Ofori-Atta currently resides.

American Judges Will Have the Final Say on the Extradition Request

The international legal journey will follow strict diplomatic and judicial protocols before any physical repatriation can happen. Ken Ofori-Atta possesses the absolute legal right to hire top-tier defense lawyers to contest the state’s application before a foreign court of law.

Eventually, an American judge will sit on the case to examine the evidence presented by the Ghanaian state before deciding whether to put the former minister on a plane back to Accra. President Mahama emphasized that a man of firm principles who has nothing to hide should simply pack his bags and return home to clear his family name.

To back his arguments with clear logic, Mahama reminded the audience of the internal political struggles that shook the previous administration. He specifically referenced the historic period when more than eighty sitting New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament boldly petitioned then-President Nana Akufo-Addo to sack Ofori-Atta.

The President humorously recalled how the former minister famously told the nation back then that he was like a loving father who could never run away and abandon his children. Mahama used that exact phrase to challenge him, stating that if Ghanaians are indeed his children, then the children are officially begging their father to come back home.

The presidency has given a firm assurance to the international community and local civil society groups that the rule of law will be strictly respected. If the former minister returns to the country, the state will grant him a completely fair, transparent trial within our local courts.

He will have access to the finest legal brains in the country to defend his past policy decisions and financial transactions. Failing to face the law will only leave a permanent cloud of dark doubt over his legacy, his children, and his grandchildren for generations to come.
