Political heat catch Parliament full force as the Appointments Committee hit a heavy wall. Members of the Minority Caucus staged a dramatic boycott right when the vetting of three Supreme Court justice nominees was about to start. The sudden walkout leave many Ghanaians asking deep questions about parliamentary rules and judicial appointments.
The whole confusion started when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised sharp objections before Justice Edward Amoako Asante could answer his first question. He complained bitter that Parliament received the official documents only three days ago. The opposition wanted the committee to pause the process, post public adverts, and allow the standard 14-day notice period for proper background checks.
Afenyo-Markin made it clear say his team no get any issue with the credentials of the three distinguished legal minds. The nominees include Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah, and former Ghana Bar Association President Anthony Forson Jr. However, the Minority insisted that the apex court is already fully working with active judges, so rushing this three-day vetting process makes no emergency sense.
Appointments Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor quickly shut down the opposition’s demands. He ruled that the Minority’s objection was hollow, baseless, and without legal backing, adding that no standing rules were violated. That strict decision triggered the immediate walkout, leaving the Majority side to carry on with the vetting proceedings alone.
This heated boycott highlights how deep political divisions remain inside our governance system. While the Majority believes speed is necessary to maintain state operations, the Minority insists that proper procedures must never be skipped for political convenience. Going forward, establishing clear consensus on appointment timelines will be vital for protecting public trust in Ghanaian democratic institutions.
