The Black Queens experienced massive heartbreak in Rabat as they exited the tournament yesterday. They suffered a painful two to one defeat against Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium. This sad result officially kicks Ghana out of the ongoing Women Africa Cup of Nations.
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren and his team started the game perfectly. Chantelle Boye Hlorkah scored a brilliant volley just seven minutes into the match to give Ghana the lead. Fans back home cheered loudly believing this would be an easy walk to victory.
However the Malawians fought back very hard. Temwa Chawinga found the back of the net in the twenty seventh minute to equalize. The game became extremely tense as both sides battled for control before the halftime whistle blew.
The second half brought serious drama and frustration for the Ghanaian side. Doris Boaduwaa actually scored what looked like the winning goal but the joy was cut short. The video assistant referee ruled the effort out for offside to the total dismay of the players and the technical bench.
Things got worse when Rose Smith Kadzere scored the decisive goal for Malawi in the seventy ninth minute. The Black Queens pushed with all their energy but the debutants defended beautifully until the very end.
This defeat means Ghana misses the automatic qualification ticket to the upcoming FIFA Women World Cup. We must now prepare for a tough playoff battle against Ivory Coast on Thursday as the journey is not entirely over yet.
