A massive fire swept through an alcohol storage warehouse at Tema Community 26 in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, July 12, sending thick black smoke into the air and prompting a large emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The blaze broke out at a warehouse used to store numerous barrels of alcohol, creating dangerous conditions for firefighters because of the highly flammable nature of the products inside the facility. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and businesses.
The Ghana National Fire Service deployed four fire tenders from the Tema Industrial Area, Ashaiman, Tema Regional Headquarters and Dodowa fire stations to tackle the fire. Firefighters worked together to contain the intense flames while protecting surrounding properties from catching fire.
The warehouse was quickly engulfed by the blaze, with heavy smoke visible from several parts of the area. Residents and motorists gathered at a safe distance as emergency personnel worked to bring the situation under control.
Firefighters faced difficult conditions as they battled the flames. The large amount of alcohol stored inside the warehouse increased the intensity of the fire and made extinguishing it more challenging. Alcohol is highly flammable, and fires involving such materials can spread rapidly if not contained quickly.
Emergency responders focused on preventing the flames from reaching nearby structures while continuing efforts to reduce the fire inside the warehouse. Their swift response helped limit the immediate risk to surrounding properties.
As of the latest update, officials had not confirmed the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to begin a full examination once the fire has been completely extinguished and the site is safe to enter.
Authorities have also not released information about possible injuries or fatalities. There has been no official confirmation of casualties, and emergency teams continue to assess the situation.
The Ghana National Fire Service has not yet disclosed the full extent of the damage to the warehouse or whether neighbouring buildings suffered any impact from the blaze. A detailed damage assessment will be carried out after firefighting operations are completed.
Residents in the area have been advised to stay away from the scene while firefighters continue their work. Thick smoke from warehouse fires can pose health risks, and emergency officials are taking precautions to ensure public safety during the operation.
Warehouse fires involving flammable liquids often require specialised firefighting techniques because of the risk of explosions and rapid flame spread. Fire crews must carefully cool surrounding areas while preventing the fire from reaching additional combustible materials.
The incident adds to a series of recent fire emergencies that have kept the Ghana National Fire Service busy in different parts of the country. Fire safety experts continue to encourage businesses that store hazardous and flammable products to maintain proper fire prevention systems, conduct regular safety inspections and ensure staff are trained to respond to emergencies.
The Ghana National Fire Service is expected to provide more information after completing its investigation into the incident. Officials will determine the cause of the fire and recommend measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
For now, firefighters remain at the warehouse as they continue efforts to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the scene to allow emergency personnel to carry out their work safely.
