MTN Ghana Equips SMEs in Western Region with Skills to Build Stronger Businesses

MTN Ghana has engaged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Western Region through a business development programme aimed at helping entrepreneurs improve their businesses with better management practices, stronger branding, and practical business skills.

The programme, held in Takoradi, formed part of the second edition of MTN Ghana’s SME Business Clinic. This year’s event focused on the theme, “Building a Strong Business Model Through Unique Branding,” bringing together business owners from across the region to learn strategies that can help them grow and compete more effectively.

The event also formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary in the country. Company officials said the initiative reflects MTN’s commitment to supporting local businesses, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, and contributing to Ghana’s economic development.

Participants attended training sessions designed to improve their understanding of branding, customer engagement, business planning, and sustainable growth. Industry experts also shared practical advice on how entrepreneurs can build businesses that remain competitive in changing market conditions.

Speaking to journalists during the event, Mohammed Abubakari Sidick, Senior Manager for SME Sales, Partnerships, and Business Broadband at MTN Ghana, said the company believes small and medium enterprises have the potential to drive economic growth and reduce unemployment across the country.

He explained that SMEs continue to play a major role in Ghana’s private sector by creating jobs, supporting local communities, and contributing significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

According to him, many small businesses have strong ideas but often lack access to the knowledge and support needed to expand successfully. He said the SME Business Clinic was created to bridge that gap by giving entrepreneurs practical tools they can immediately apply in their businesses.

Mr. Abubakari Sidick noted that MTN Ghana partnered with experienced professionals who provided training in branding, packaging, marketing, and other important business development areas. These sessions were designed to help business owners improve their products and services while increasing their ability to compete in both local and international markets.

He added that building a successful business requires more than offering quality products. Strong branding, effective management, and continuous innovation are equally important for attracting customers and maintaining long term growth.

Participants also had the opportunity to interact with business experts, ask questions, and receive advice tailored to the specific challenges facing their companies. The interactive nature of the programme allowed entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and learn from one another’s experiences.

Many business owners welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important opportunity to gain practical knowledge that is often difficult for small businesses to access. Some participants said the training gave them new ideas for improving customer service, strengthening their brands, and managing business operations more efficiently.

Entrepreneurs also highlighted the importance of networking during the event. Meeting other business owners from different industries created opportunities to build partnerships, share experiences, and explore future collaborations.

The SME Business Clinic reflects a growing effort by private sector organisations to support entrepreneurship in Ghana. Small and medium enterprises account for a significant share of businesses across the country and continue to serve as a major source of employment.

Despite their importance, many SMEs face challenges such as limited access to financing, inadequate business training, increasing competition, and changing consumer expectations. Programmes like the MTN SME Business Clinic seek to address some of these challenges by providing practical education and professional guidance.

MTN Ghana has consistently supported entrepreneurship through various initiatives aimed at improving digital skills, financial inclusion, and business development. The company says empowering local businesses contributes directly to national economic growth and community development.

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, MTN plans to continue investing in programmes that create opportunities for individuals, entrepreneurs, and businesses across Ghana. Company officials believe strengthening SMEs will help build a more resilient economy while creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people.

Business experts at the event encouraged participants to continue learning, embrace innovation, and adapt to changing market conditions. They stressed that businesses that invest in branding, customer relationships, and sound management practices are more likely to achieve long term success.

The Takoradi programme demonstrated the growing partnership between the private sector and Ghana’s entrepreneurial community. By equipping business owners with practical skills and knowledge, MTN Ghana hopes to help SMEs build stronger businesses that contribute to economic growth, create jobs, and remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic business environment.
