Exciting times are ahead for international opportunities as the Australian Government names career diplomat Keara Shaw as its new High Commissioner to Ghana.
Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, announced the high-profile appointment on July 5, 2026. The incoming envoy will also handle Australia’s non-resident representation to eight other West African nations including Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Togo.
Ghana remains a very key partner for Australia because of our solid political stability and strong leadership role in the West African sub-region. The beautiful relationship between the two nations is growing fast on the back of a shared Commonwealth heritage and powerful people-to-people connections.
If you are looking at business expansion, this change brings real economic promise because both countries are actively expanding cooperation. Big moves are happening across lucrative sectors like trade, investment, mining, and climate-resilient agriculture while driving peace and security across Africa.
Ms Shaw brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to Accra as a seasoned career officer with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has successfully served in major diplomatic capacities across Indonesia, Zimbabwe, and Mauritius in her impressive career.
She takes over from Berenice Owen-Jones who served excellently in the role since 2022 to strengthen bilateral relations. Australia has maintained a deep historical connection with us since reopening its Accra High Commission back in 2004.
