No Defence Filed Yet in Accra Sky Train Trial

The high profile corruption case involving the highly talked about Accra Sky Train project has hit another critical timeline at the High Court. Former top bosses of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund have not yet filed their official defence statements as the final legal deadline approaches rapidly.

The state is moving steadily to ensure total accountability regarding how public funds are deployed for massive infrastructure projects. This latest update from the prosecution team has renewed intense public interest among ordinary citizens who are eagerly waiting to see how the multi-million dollar transport drama unfolds in court.

The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, revealed the current state of the trial through an official social media briefing. He clarified that the specific legal window given to the accused persons to submit their formal witness statements will come to a permanent end next week.

So far, the prosecution team has not received a single piece of paper or defence brief from either of the two prominent men. The individuals at the center of the case are the former Chief Executive Officer of the fund, Solomon Asamoah, and the former Board Chairman, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi.

This urgent requirement for the suspects to file their defence comes after a major courtroom victory for the state. Two weeks ago, the presiding judge completely threw out a submission of no case filed by the lawyers representing the former public officials.

The High Court firmly ruled that the state attorneys had presented substantial evidence that requires a direct response from the two gentlemen. The court subsequently ordered them to open their defence and justify their past financial actions if they truly want to clear their names of the serious state liability charges.

The roots of this intense criminal trial trace back to a massive financial transaction executed during the 2019 fiscal year. The state alleges that the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund paid out two million United States dollars to acquire an equity stake in a private project development company.

This heavy cash release was meant to kickstart the feasibility and structural planning for the proposed Accra Sky Train transport network. Shockingly, the prosecution claims that the massive payment went through without any required board approval, and the train project never surfaced on the ground, resulting in a direct financial loss to the state.

Despite the heavy nature of the forensic financial records presented by the state, Solomon Asamoah and Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi have firmly denied any wrongdoing. The two long-serving public figures maintain that their actions followed proper investment logic meant to benefit national development.

With the legal deadline concluding next week, the general public is waiting to see if their legal teams will file their witness statements on time or ask for an extension. The outcome of this trial will send a very strong message to corporate directors regarding the absolute necessity of maintaining maximum transparency when managing state funds.
