The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the arrest and prosecution of the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, if investigations establish his culpability in allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.
The demand was made during a demonstration by the party’s Women’s Wing in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region on Friday, November 6, 2026.
The protest, held under the theme “Justice for Our Girls”, sought justice for the students and stronger measures to protect girls from sexual abuse and exploitation in schools.
The allegations against the headmaster have attracted public attention following an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which raised concerns about the safety and welfare of female students at the school.
NPP calls for accountability
National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson led the party’s call for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
She said the students deserved protection and urged authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the claims.
The NPP also wants investigators to examine whether school and education officials acted appropriately after concerns were reportedly raised.
The party has called for a transparent investigation, regular updates from the authorities and accountability for anyone found to have been involved in wrongdoing.
Demonstrators demand justice for students
The demonstrators called for the protection of the rights, dignity and safety of female students, stressing that schools must provide safe environments where children can pursue their education without fear of abuse.
The Women’s Wing has also called for stronger safeguarding systems, including confidential channels through which students can report abuse and access to counselling services in schools.
The protest follows growing public concern over allegations involving 19 female students at Obuasi SHTS.
Headmaster remains under investigation
The headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, was suspended by the Ministry of Education and subsequently interdicted by the Ghana Education Service after the allegations emerged.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak earlier disclosed that Abdulai had been arrested and questioned by police. He was later granted bail.
The police have indicated that a case involving one complaint had been referred to the Attorney-General for advice, while other allegations require separate formal complaints and investigations.
Abdulai has denied the allegations and said he intends to pursue lawful avenues to clear his name.
The allegations have not been established in court.
Calls for stronger protection in schools
The demonstration has renewed calls for stronger child-protection measures in Ghanaian schools.
The NPP Women’s Wing wants authorities to investigate the allegations fully, examine the response of relevant school officials and ensure that students have safe and confidential ways to report misconduct.
The outcome of the investigations will be important in establishing the facts and determining whether any individual or institution should be held legally accountable.
