The National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mavis Hawa Koomson, has given the government until the end of November 2026 to take concrete action over allegations of sexual abuse involving female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
She warned that the NPP Women’s Wing would not abandon its campaign for justice if authorities failed to address the concerns raised by the affected students and their families.
Madam Koomson made the statement on Friday, November 6, during a demonstration organised by the party’s Women’s Wing in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on GhanAkoma, hosted by Sir John, she said the group would petition President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive.
The petitions are intended to press the authorities to ensure that the allegations are thoroughly investigated and that those found culpable are held accountable.
Koomson questions delay in action
Madam Koomson expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of action in the case, particularly questioning why the school’s headmaster remained free while teachers reportedly implicated in the matter had been remanded for two weeks.
She argued that the headmaster’s interdiction alone was not enough and called for further action in accordance with the law.
She insisted that the investigation must establish the full circumstances surrounding the allegations and ensure that no individual is shielded from accountability.
Women’s Wing plans further action
The NPP Women’s Wing says it will continue pressing the government and relevant institutions until its concerns are addressed.
Madam Koomson warned that failure to secure meaningful action by the end of November could lead to further steps by the group.
The demonstration in Obuasi formed part of the party’s campaign under the theme “Justice for Our Girls”, which seeks accountability and stronger protection for students in Ghanaian schools.
Investigations into allegations continue
The case involving the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has generated public concern following allegations of sexual misconduct involving 19 female students.
The Ghana Education Service has interdicted the headmaster, while the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department is investigating the allegations.
The headmaster has denied the allegations and is entitled to due process. The claims have not been established in court.
The NPP Women’s Wing says it expects the government and investigative authorities to provide answers and take appropriate action before the end of November.
