The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the United States government to suspend diplomatic courtesies granted to six Ghanaian holders of diplomatic and service passports over allegations of irregularities in the issuance of the travel documents.

The party is questioning the basis on which the six individuals obtained their passports, claiming that they do not occupy the positions stated in two approval letters issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2026.

According to the NPP, the approval letters contain information that raises questions about the eligibility of the individuals to receive the diplomatic and service passports.

The party is therefore asking the United States to review the courtesies extended to the passport holders while the concerns surrounding the documents are examined.

NPP Raises Concerns Over Passport Approvals

In its petition, the NPP alleged that the six individuals do not hold the official positions indicated in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ approval letters.

The party further claimed that two of the positions mentioned in the letters do not exist, raising questions about the accuracy of the information used to support the passport applications.

Diplomatic and service passports are issued to individuals who qualify under specific official categories and government arrangements. Their issuance is generally connected to the responsibilities or official duties of the holders.

The NPP argues that if the positions listed in the approval letters are inaccurate or do not exist, the circumstances surrounding the approvals require further examination.

However, the allegations remain claims made by the party and do not, on their own, establish that the passports were unlawfully issued.

Party Seeks US Review of Diplomatic Courtesies

The NPP’s petition specifically calls on the United States to suspend diplomatic courtesies granted to the six passport holders.

Diplomatic courtesies may include certain forms of recognition, facilitation or protocol extended to individuals travelling on official government business.

The party’s request places the matter within the broader discussion of how diplomatic and service passports are approved and the responsibilities attached to their use.

Any decision by the US government would depend on its own diplomatic procedures and assessment of the information presented.

Questions for Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry

The allegations also raise questions about the processes used by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to approve diplomatic and service passports.

The ministry is responsible for handling matters relating to Ghana’s diplomatic representation and official travel documentation.

Clarification from the ministry would help establish the positions held by the six individuals, the basis for the August 2026 approval letters and whether the relevant procedures were followed.

The individuals concerned would also have an opportunity to respond to the allegations.

For now, the issue remains a matter of political and diplomatic concern, with attention likely to focus on the response from Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and the United States government.
