The heated political struggle for local leadership within the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region has finally settled into official business. The newly elected constituency executives of the Afigya Sekyere East NPP have formally taken their oath of office. The high-profile swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, marking a fresh chapter for the local party branch.
The transition of power followed a highly competitive and tense election over the weekend. Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known in political circles as Chairman Wontumi, personally administered the oath of office to the newly formed ten-member executive team.
While the swearing-in ceremony went smoothly, the path to the ballot box was anything but peaceful. A sudden outbreak of physical violence temporarily disrupted the constituency voting exercise on Sunday. Angry confrontations at the voting venue forced the police to intervene rapidly to restore law and order.
Security personnel arrested seven individuals during the electoral scuffle to prevent further destruction of property. Among those detained by the police was the popular party activist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. Despite the chaotic scenes, tight security measures allowed the Electoral Commission to safely resume and successfully conclude the voting process.
The final vote count revealed a very clear preference among the local party delegates. Kwaku Ofosu secured a massive victory by polling eight hundred and ninety-three votes to claim the chairman position. His closest rival, Daniel Gyimah, managed to secure only two hundred and fifty-five votes, while five ballots were completely rejected.
In his victory speech, Ofosu expressed deep gratitude to the delegates and immediately initiated steps to heal the divisions within the constituency. He pledged to run an inclusive administration, urging all aggrieved members to put the disputed election behind them for the collective progress of the party.
The new constituency chairman made his ultimate political goal clear to the cheering supporters in the hall. Ofosu declared that his leadership will focus heavily on strengthening the party structures at the polling station level to ensure a massive victory for flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Chairman Wontumi also congratulated the new executives and reminded them of the heavy task ahead. He emphasized that building a highly unified and active grassroots base in the Afigya Sekyere East constituency remains the ultimate key to victory. The party leadership must work tirelessly to maintain its strong foothold in the region as the country prepares for the next national election.
