The relationship between social media freedom and national security laws has reached a major boiling point in Ghana. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially criticized the sharp one-year prison sentence handed to popular digital influencer Camilla Alhassan by an Accra Circuit Court.

The main opposition party released a highly charged statement describing the sudden judicial outcome as a direct assault on the constitutional right to free speech. The legal development has triggered deep conversations across various local online platforms regarding how state institutions handle political criticism in the digital age.

The high-profile legal battle started after the forty-three-year-old creator, who commands a massive following on TikTok, shared a series of controversial videos. In her viral videos, she alleged that President John Dramani Mahama had performed hidden spiritual rituals involving dozens of cattle to manipulate national election outcomes.

She further claimed that a recent government relief distribution program aimed at helping flood victims was a calculated attempt to hide these activities. State prosecutors swiftly moved in, charging her with offensive conduct and the deliberate publication of false news, which led to her immediate conviction after she pleaded guilty.

The leadership of the elephant family expressed absolute shock at how the judiciary rushed to enforce a custodial sentence on a social media user. The NPP argued logically that if the President truly believed his public image had been defamed by the TikToker, the best option should have been a civil defamation lawsuit rather than a criminal trial.

Using heavy state security machinery to lock up citizens over verbal insults or unverified online gossip sets a very dangerous precedent. The party executives noted that the harsh treatment given to Camilla Alhassan after her conviction directly undermines human dignity and reduces public trust in law enforcement agencies.

The NPP has formally pledged to finance and support every lawful effort by Alhassan’s defense team to overturn both the conviction and the one-year jail term. The party is calling on independent bodies like the Ghana Bar Association, the National Peace Council, and the media to speak out boldly against the criminalization of speech.

The state insists that the sentence was necessary to discourage the fast spread of dangerous misinformation and hate speech online. However, the defense team is preparing their appellate documents, hoping a higher court will review the harshness of the punishment and grant the influencer her freedom before the year ends.
