Parliament Demands Shift From Political Rhetoric to Sustainable Youth Employment

Ghanaian policymakers face an urgent call to overhaul national job creation strategies. Speaking in Parliament on June 12 2026, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, urged the government to address the escalating youth unemployment crisis with maximum urgency.

The Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee stressed that the younger demographic is completely tired of political slogans and partisan rhetoric. Instead, young citizens are actively demanding practical, well-designed programs that deliver dignified, sustainable, and well-paying jobs.

Relying on temporary solutions to fix long-term economic deficits is a logical misstep that stalls national development. To break this cycle, the legislator proposed a clear distinction between raw skills development and actual job creation programs, noting that both require independent strategies to yield meaningful results.

First, Oppong Nkrumah advocated for the immediate establishment of a credible, state-backed labor market information system. This centralized digital framework would provide economic managers with highly accurate data regarding real-time employment trends and emerging workforce needs across various industries.

Second, he argued that all future state employment initiatives must anchor themselves on measurable performance indicators rather than broad promises. Key metrics should include precise counts of active beneficiaries, long-term job retention rates, and the ultimate economic impact on families. Third, the lawmaker emphasized that strict accountability and rigorous monitoring are non-negotiable to ensure that public funds deliver tangible benefits to the youth.

Expecting a modern economy to thrive while ignoring the structural needs of its largest demographic is an absolute impossibility. Moving forward, state-backed interventions must move completely away from short-term public relations campaigns and focus heavily on data-driven industrial growth.

By building transparent monitoring systems and funding verifiable job markets, Ghana can successfully transform its youth into a powerful engine for regional economic prosperity.
