Parliament Must Remain Independent, Says Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a firm reminder regarding the constitutional independence of the legislative branch.

During a courtesy call by the Supreme Court 150th Anniversary Planning Committee on Thursday, June 11, 2026, he stated clearly that he is not obligated to follow directives from the President.

He explained that his authority is derived directly from Parliament, which serves as the representative body of the people. As an official elected by an electoral college rather than an appointee of the presidency, he maintains that the Speaker’s role is distinct and separate from executive control.

While acknowledging that President John Dramani Mahama may offer perspectives on national issues, the Speaker stressed that such views do not dictate the final decisions of the House. He noted that Parliament must be free to deliberate and vote based on its own assessment of the national interest.

This stance highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the separation of powers in Ghana’s governance. It serves as a reminder that while the executive and legislative branches are expected to collaborate, they remain separate institutions with different mandates and responsibilities.

The Speaker also used this platform to advocate for urgent reforms in how Supreme Court judges are selected. He suggested that the judiciary should play a central role in choosing its own leadership to ensure that the appointment process remains professional and shielded from political influence.

Ultimately, these remarks reflect a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions. By emphasizing the boundaries between the branches of government, the Speaker aims to reinforce the principle of a robust, independent, and effective legislative body.

Maintaining this balance of power is vital for a healthy democracy. As Ghana continues to evolve, these discussions remain central to shaping the future of governance and protecting the independence of the nation’s core institutions.
