Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, has said parliamentary immunity must not stop criminal investigations involving Members of Parliament.
He said the constitutional protection given to MPs should not be used to avoid investigations by law enforcement agencies.
His comments come amid the ongoing case involving Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Dr Srem-Sai said law enforcement agencies must be allowed to do their work while respecting the constitutional rights of MPs.
The discussion centres on Article 117 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which provides certain protections for MPs when travelling to, attending or returning from parliamentary proceedings.
The issue has sparked public discussion about the limits of parliamentary immunity when an MP is facing a criminal investigation.
The allegations against Baffour Awuah remain under investigation and have not been proven in court.
