President John Dramani Mahama has described the passing of Yaa Naa Abukari II as a profound national loss. Speaking during the official delegation visit at the presidency on July 20, 2026, the President stated that Ghana has lost a great citizen and statesperson.
The Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom was widely celebrated across the country for his wisdom, moderation, and unwavering commitment to peace. His transition leaves a major void in the traditional leadership landscape of the nation.
President Mahama emphasized that His Royal Majesty assumed leadership of Dagbon during one of the most challenging periods in the kingdom’s history. Through extraordinary patience, humility, and determination, the late overlord transformed a kingdom previously plagued by division into a lasting symbol of unity.
His reign proved to the world that true leadership is measured by the ability to heal wounds and bring people together. His famous philosophy remained simple yet profound: he loved those who built bridges of peace and rejected those who destroyed it.
Reflecting on his personal bond with the late monarch, President Mahama shared that their relationship went far beyond their public offices. They worked closely together during his first presidency alongside the Otumfuo mediation team to resolve the Dagbon crisis.
Over the years, their connection grew into a deep father and son relationship that remained strong through every season. The President expressed his heartfelt grief and extended deepest condolences to the Dagbon Royal Family, the Dagbon Traditional Council, and the entire nation.
Beyond his personal warmth, Yaa Naa Abukari II leaves behind an enduring legacy of structural peace. He spearheaded the preparation and unanimous adoption of the Dagbon Constitution, establishing a clear framework for stability, succession, and governance.
His peacebuilding efforts extended across borders, including a landmark historic visit to the Yagbonwura that created the Joint Dagbon-Gonja Committee to resolve boundary disputes. The government has promised to work hand in hand with the traditional council to give the departed king a fitting state farewell.
