The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested two teachers of Techiman Senior High School (SHS) following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing them physically assaulting a 17-year-old final-year student.
The two teachers, identified as 37-year-old Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, an English teacher, and 44-year-old Ameyaw Adusa, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) teacher, were arrested on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Police said the teachers were in custody assisting with investigations into the incident.
How the Incident Happened
According to preliminary police investigations, the alleged assault occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, at about 4:00 pm on the school’s campus.
The teachers allegedly confronted the Form Three student over claims that he had assaulted two Form One students before physically assaulting him.
The incident came to public attention after a video purportedly showing the assault circulated widely on social media, attracting public concern and calls for action.
The footage has raised questions about student safety, discipline and the responsibility of teachers to protect learners under their care.
Ghana Education Service Begins Investigation
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has also commenced investigations into the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, the Service identified the affected student as Seedorf Abeka Ampah, a final-year Agricultural Science student.
GES disclosed that the school’s disciplinary committee had held an initial hearing into the matter. Its findings are expected to be submitted to management through the Regional Directorate to guide further action.
The Service further confirmed that the student had received medical attention and was responding positively to treatment.
Education Ministry Calls for Action
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, also referred the viral video to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for urgent investigation.
He said the referral was made at the instance of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, with the Director-General directed to investigate the incident and apply appropriate sanctions against anyone found culpable.
Dr Apaak stressed that misconduct would not be tolerated in schools, whether involving teaching staff, non-teaching staff, students or parents.
Police Assure Student of Support
The Bono East Regional Police Command has assured the public that it is taking steps to ensure the affected student receives the necessary medical and psychological support.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students and safeguarding their welfare.
The two teachers remain in police custody as investigations continue.
The case has renewed discussions about the protection of students in Ghanaian schools and the need for school authorities to handle disciplinary matters within established rules and procedures.
The outcome of the police and GES investigations is expected to determine the next steps in the matter. The allegations against the teachers have not yet been established in court.
