President Mahama Confirms No State Funding for 2026 World Cup Fan Travel

President John Dramani Mahama has officially ruled out government-funded travel for Ghanaian football supporters attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He cited the immense financial strain such a program would impose on the national budget, emphasizing that the state must prioritize economic responsibility during these challenging times.

The decision stems from a detailed analysis of the costs involved for each individual supporter. President Mahama explained that covering airfare, accommodation, food, local transport, and match tickets would cost approximately $11,000 per person. Given that Ghana’s matches take place across multiple cities in North America, the President argued that funding large-scale fan travel is an unsustainable venture for the government.

The 2026 tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, presents unique logistical hurdles for traveling fans. Because Ghana’s Group L fixtures are scheduled for different cities, the travel and lodging expenses are significantly higher than in past tournament formats.

Ghana is set to play its matches in three distinct locations:

  • The campaign opens on June 17, 2026, against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto.
  • The second match against England is scheduled for Boston.
  • The final group stage encounter against Croatia will take place in Philadelphia.

Instead of paying for travel, the government is launching a diaspora ticket initiative to ensure the Black Stars receive strong support on the ground. President Mahama announced that the government will procure match tickets and distribute them through recognized Ghanaian community organizations located in the host countries.

This alternative initiative aims to achieve two goals:

  • Ensure a vibrant Ghanaian presence in the stadiums during match days.
  • Avoid placing an excessive financial burden on the national treasury.

Government representatives have already started engaging with Ghanaian associations in Boston, Philadelphia, and Canada to facilitate fair ticket distribution for those living in the diaspora. This ensures that fans already residing in or near the host cities can attend the games to cheer for the national team.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, aiming to build on a legacy that includes reaching the quarter-finals in 2010. As four-time African champions, the Black Stars carry the hopes of the nation into a tough Group L draw alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

By focusing resources on the team’s preparation and enabling diaspora fans to provide local support, the administration hopes to create a balanced approach to the tournament. While the government will not subsidize mass travel, the commitment to securing tickets ensures that the “Black Stars” will feel the warmth and energy of their supporters at every stadium they visit in North America.
