Former National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has raised fresh concerns regarding internal party democracy in Ghana. He strongly argues that the recent landmark Supreme Court ruling striking down the delegates system will fail to eliminate political vote buying across the country.
The apex court delivered a historic five to two verdict declaring the restricted delegates system unconstitutional. The legal challenge, brought by prominent figures including Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, and Dr. Christine Amoako Nuamah, directed all political parties to adopt an all inclusive voting system within one year.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Vanderpuye explained that opening voting rights to all registered members in good standing simply changes how politicians distribute money. He noted that ambitious aspirants will now bankroll annual membership dues for thousands of supporters to secure their votes during presidential primaries.
According to him, paying dues for delegates on their behalf represents another dangerous form of electoral corruption. Instead of voters paying out of their own free will, wealthy politicians will step in to buy influence indirectly through mass fee payments.
Vanderpuye emphasized that changing voting rules does not cure the underlying disease of monetization in Ghanaian elections. He insists that real reform requires state institutions to enforce existing laws strictly and penalize individuals caught engaging in bribery.
Ghanaian voters and political analysts continue to debate the practical implications of this judicial directive as political parties prepare to restructure their internal election guidelines.
