One suspected illegal miner has died, while four others have been arrested following a clash between suspected illegal miners and operatives of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in the Atiwa Forest Reserve.
The four arrested suspects comprise three Malian nationals and one Ghanaian.
The incident occurred during an operation by NAIMOS personnel targeting suspected illegal mining activities within the forest reserve.
Four suspects arrested
The arrested individuals are expected to assist with investigations into the incident and alleged illegal mining activities in the protected area.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, which continues to pose a threat to Ghana’s forest reserves, water bodies and environment.
Concerns over illegal mining in forest reserves
Illegal mining in protected forest areas has remained a major environmental concern, with authorities facing pressure to strengthen enforcement and protect the country’s natural resources.
The Atiwa Forest Reserve is an important ecological area in Ghana, making efforts to prevent unauthorised mining activities particularly significant.
Further details about the circumstances surrounding the clash, the identity of the deceased and the condition of the arrested suspects are yet to be confirmed.
