Frustration is currently boiling over within our academic circles as university lecturers demand what belongs to them. The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has issued a strict ultimatum to the government. They want all outstanding salaries and legitimate allowances cleared before August 31, 2026. Academic staff serving under approved post-retirement contracts have suffered long enough without pay.
Some affected lecturers have reportedly gone without a single paycheck for over 24 months. Despite this terrible financial frustration, these dedicated senior academics continue to teach students and supervise crucial university research. Treating veteran educators in this manner defies basic logic and common fairness. You simply cannot expect people to work for two years without receiving their monthly wages.
During a recent media briefing in Accra, TUTAG President Professor Deodat E. Adenutsi addressed the ongoing crisis. He stated clearly that the association will no longer accept endless excuses or administrative delays from state bodies. The leadership also rejected any attempts to redirect these valid grievances to individual technical universities. The central government must step up and fix this mess immediately.
Post-retirement contracts remain a vital component of service conditions designed to retain experienced professors for accreditation needs. Failing to pay these senior lecturers creates unnecessary tension on campuses across the country. Technical universities rely heavily on their expertise to mentor younger academics and keep programs running smoothly. Disrupting their livelihood threatens the overall stability of tertiary education in Ghana.
Authorities now have until the end of the month to settle all arrears and restore regular payments. TUTAG have shown remarkable patience, but every human endurance level has a strict limit. We hope the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies act fast to avert any looming industrial unrest. Our hardworking educators deserve better treatment after dedicating their entire lives to national development.
