Two Nigerian nationals and former members of the US Air Force have been sentenced to a combined 189 months in federal prison for their roles in an international cyber fraud scheme targeting businesses and nonprofit organisations in the United States.
Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu, 25, was sentenced to 111 months in prison and ordered to pay $366,617.59 in restitution.
Harafat Mogaji, 26, received a 78-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay $995,680.45 in restitution.
According to prosecutors, the two men used phishing campaigns, stolen email credentials and spoofed email addresses to target businesses and redirect legitimate payments into accounts controlled by the fraud scheme.
Prosecutors said the scheme resulted in significant financial losses for victims.
One victim in Iowa reportedly lost more than $1.68 million, while another victim in Ohio lost over $720,000.
The case highlights the growing risks businesses and nonprofit organisations face from online fraud, particularly attacks that target email accounts and payment systems.
US authorities continue to warn organisations to strengthen email security, verify payment requests and remain alert to suspicious changes in payment instructions.
The two sentences bring the total prison terms for the former US Air Force members to more than 15 years.
