The atmosphere in Cairo is very hot, but the boys from Tamale are making Ghana proud with pure masterclass football.The University for Development Studies football team has done it again on the grand African stage.
Playing away from home in Egypt, our boys showed everyone why they wear the badge of reigning champions.They faced Delta University of Egypt in the semifinals and cleared them off the pitch with a heavy four zero scoreline.This is not just ordinary football because the boys are carrying the hopes of the entire nation on their shoulders.
How the goals came inside the pitch
The match started with a lot of tension as the Egyptian side tried to use their home advantage to silence our boys early.UDS kept their cool, soaked the pressure, and waited for the right time to strike like a true lion in the bush.Right on the stroke of half-time, Akusaayela Nuhu broke the virgin deadlock by heading home a sweet cross from Ezedeen Alhassan.
That first goal sent the few Ghanaian supporters inside the stadium into wild dancing and loud drumming.As soon as the second half referees whistle went off, captain Mohammed Asigri wasted no time adding the second goal.He unleashed a wicked shot from the edge of the box that left the Egyptian goalkeeper standing like a statue.
Before the opponent could recover from shock, Alhassan Zakaria popped up with the third goal in the sixty-eighth minute.To put the final nail in the coffin, Abdul Majeed Suglo scored the fourth goal in the eighty-fifth minute to seal the massive victory.
The journey to defend the continental crown
Coming into the 12th All Africa University Games in Egypt, the target was very clear for the Northern-based institution.They came as the defending champions who won the previous trophy in Lagos, Nigeria, two years ago.People doubted whether they could replicate that same magic on North African soil, but the team proved the doubters wrong.Their journey in Cairo has been nothing short of spectacular, scoring plenty of goals while keeping their defense tight.
Management members including the Pro Vice Chancellor and the Director of Sports travelled all the way to support the squad.That kind of high-level backing gives the young players extra morale to die for the three colours of the school flag.
When you watch how they transition from defense to attack, you will realize that Ghanaian university sports has really evolved.They are playing with brains, tactical discipline, and that stubborn Ghanaian determination that refuses to accept defeat.
Looking ahead to the grand finale
The final match is fast approaching, and the whole of Ghana is glued to their screens waiting for the final whistle.UDS is now just one final step away from retaining the prestigious trophy and bringing it back to Tamale.The boys know that the job is not finished yet because the final battle will require even more sweat and focus.Whether they meet the University of Hertfordshire or the Federation of Guinea Universities, the boys are battle-ready.
