Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has explained that recent power outages stem from a fragile temporary setup at the Akosombo power plant. Speaking on Thursday August twentieth 2026 at the PURC building commissioning in Accra, he noted that engineers built this stopgap system to prevent a six month total shutdown after an April substation explosion.
GRIDCo reported that a major fault on the Akosombo Volta transmission line triggered an automatic shutdown across generating units to protect the national grid. Citizens in Accra and other regions suffered widespread blackouts starting around dawn as thermal plants tripped alongside the dam. This disruption marks the second major grid failure in under a month following a similar incident on July twenty ninth.
The current instability traces back to an April twenty third fire that destroyed the switch yard and halted roughly one thousand megawatts of electricity supply. Engineers quickly bypassed the ruined control center to keep lights on using the temporary arrangement Minister Jinapor referenced. Authorities confirmed that a permanent control center will be ready next month to restore full stability to the national power supply.
