Former Ghanaian professional cruiserweight boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has arrived at the Dansoman Circuit Court. The former fighter stands accused of issuing a threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The legal trouble follows a viral social media video where the former boxer allegedly threatened to shoot the sports official. The Accra Regional Police Command intercepted the footage and arrested Powers on public safety concerns.
The heated conflict between the cruiserweight boxer and the sports administrator stems from a long-running financial grievance. Powers claimed he lost nearly $100,000 after his planned boxing promotion, “Judgement Day,” faced cancellation.
The NSA suspended boxing events across the country following the tragic death of boxer Ernest Akushey. Powers expressed frustration that promised financial compensation never materialized, leading to his emotional outbursts online.
During police interrogations, the boxer admitted making the statements but explained he spoke purely out of intense anger. Law enforcement officers stressed that public safety remains paramount, regardless of personal financial frustrations.
He pleaded not guilty to the formal charges in court. Legal representatives for both sides arrived as prosecutors presented their caution statements and digital evidence gathered during field investigations.
This court appearance highlights the legal dangers of making threats online during personal disputes. The law treats verbal threats of violence seriously, even when expressed out of emotional pain.
Sports fans and legal observers continue to monitor proceedings at the Dansoman Circuit Court. State prosecutors insist that lawful procedures must resolve all administrative disagreements instead of public intimidation.
