The government has suspended the implementation of the Legislative Instrument (LI) seeking to ban preaching and hawking in moving vehicles, particularly on public transport.

The decision follows public concerns about the proposed restrictions and their possible impact on passengers, traders and religious activities.

The proposed measures form part of efforts to improve road safety by reducing distractions for drivers and passengers.

Preaching and hawking in moving vehicles have raised concerns about safety, especially when activities distract drivers or interfere with passengers.

However, the suspension means enforcement of the proposed measures has been put on hold for now.

The government’s decision comes as public discussion continues over how to balance road safety with religious freedom and the livelihoods of people who sell goods on public transport.

Further clarification may be needed on when the LI could be implemented and whether changes will be made to the proposed restrictions.
