Tensions have reached a new high in Parliament following serious allegations regarding the selection process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority caucus claims that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is bypassing official directives by allocating sponsorship slots to specific political figures rather than prioritizing Ghanaians living abroad.
Deputy Minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu addressed these concerns during a press conference on Tuesday, June 9. He alleged that the Ministry is granting priority access to supporters despite earlier promises that the government would focus on facilitating diaspora attendance to ensure fiscal discipline.
The claims suggest that Majority Members of Parliament have received two slots each to nominate individuals for government-sponsored travel. Furthermore, Iddrisu alleged that constituencies are receiving additional slots through District Chief Executives, creating a perception of partisan distribution.
This development contradicts the government’s previous commitment to avoid the high financial burden of sponsoring large travel groups from Ghana. Transparency remains a central issue as the Minority demands an urgent briefing on the preparations and the total budget for the tournament.
Critics maintain that the current lack of information regarding training camps and financial outlays creates unnecessary confusion. They argue that the public deserves a full account of how the state intends to manage its resources during this international event.
Maintaining the integrity of the selection process is vital for ensuring that Ghana is represented effectively. If these allegations of partisan allocation prove true, they could significantly damage the administration’s reputation both at home and abroad.
The demand for neutrality from security agencies and government ministries remains a constant theme in this ongoing discussion. Lawmakers continue to push for adherence to the Constitution and official government directives to prevent the politicization of international sports.
As the tournament approaches, the need for clear communication from the Ministry of Youth and Sports has never been greater. Citizens and stakeholders are watching to see if the government can resolve these discrepancies before the team heads to the global stage.
