President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm directive to the National Disaster Management Organisation to launch an urgent mapping project across Accra. This initiative aims to identify all restricted and protected lands that currently face illegal encroachment.
The President addressed this issue on Tuesday, June 9, after returning from his official trip to the UK and Belarus. He emphasized that the government must move quickly to protect vulnerable waterways before the next rainy season worsens the city’s flooding crisis.
Teams from NADMO and a newly formed national task force will survey the capital to compile a detailed report on unauthorized developments. This data will provide the government with the evidence needed to safeguard protected zones effectively.
Once the task force submits its presentation, the administration intends to take decisive action to clear blocked drainage paths. Restoring these zones serves as a fundamental step toward building long term urban resilience against recurring climate disasters.
The administration believes that protecting the safety of all Ghanaians is the core business of the state. While clearing encroached land can feel harsh, it remains the only logical solution to a problem that threatens thousands of homes annually.
Urban development in Accra must follow proper safety standards to avoid the tragic consequences of poor planning. The government hopes this new mapping exercise will finally allow for a more sustainable approach to city management.
We expect the task force to act immediately after the report reaches the cabinet. Restoring the natural flow of water through the city will significantly reduce the risk of future disasters for local residents.
Sustainable development requires us all to respect the rules that keep our environment safe. By supporting this initiative, the city can move closer to becoming a more resilient and flood free capital for everyone.
