Chiefs of the Apinto Divisional Council in Tarkwa have taken a bold step by formally writing to Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners, asking him to bid for the famous Tarkwa Mine. The traditional leaders want a top local company to manage the gold rich concession once the current mining lease expires in April 2027.
South African mining company Gold Fields Ghana has been operating the Tarkwa Mine since 1993. By the time their current operational lease runs out in 2027, the foreign firm would have extracted gold from the area for nearly thirty four years.
Traditional authorities in the Western Region feel strongly that local communities deserve far greater economic benefits from their natural resources. The council members argue that taking over by a Ghanaian owned enterprise will create sustainable jobs and bring true development to host communities.
Engineers and Planners stands out as one of West Africa’s leading Ghanaian owned mining contractors with extensive technical expertise. The chiefs believe indigenous ownership will correct long standing imbalances between heavy mineral extraction and real community growth.
Gold Fields has previously defended its long tenure, pointing to substantial investments in local infrastructure, healthcare, and education. However, traditional leaders insist that the future of Ghanaian natural resources must rest in local hands for the maximum benefit of the people.
