The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, remains in custody in the Netherlands after efforts to secure his release on bail proved unsuccessful.
Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, disclosed the development during a parliamentary leaders’ media briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
According to him, attempts by the MP’s legal team to secure bail have not been successful, leaving Mr Frimpong in detention in Amsterdam.
He further disclosed that the substantive extradition hearing is scheduled to begin on November 18, 2026, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Mr Dafeamekpor also dismissed reports suggesting that the MP had already been transferred to the United States.
He explained that the extradition process was still ongoing in the Netherlands and that Mr Frimpong remained in custody there.
Background to the MP’s detention
Mr Frimpong was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, after arriving from Ghana. His detention followed an extradition request from the United States.
Parliament subsequently confirmed his detention and said it was engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further information.
The case has been linked in reports to allegations involving romance scams and money laundering. However, the allegations have not been established in court, and Mr Frimpong has not been convicted of any offence.
His lawyers have previously challenged aspects of the case, including the nature of the warrant issued by US authorities.
November 18 hearing
The upcoming hearing is expected to consider the extradition proceedings and whether the legal requirements for transferring the Ghanaian legislator to the United States have been met.
Mr Frimpong remains in Dutch custody as the legal process continues.
The outcome of the November 18 hearing could determine the next stage of the case, which has attracted public and parliamentary attention in Ghana.
