China Praises Ghana for Bold Plan to Stop Importing Fuel and Refine Local Crude

Ghana is taking a massive step toward complete energy independence. The Chinese government has commended the country’s aggressive drive to process its natural resources locally instead of exporting them raw.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, praised this vision during the official commissioning of Phase Two of the Sentuo Oil Refinery Project in Tema. President John Dramani Mahama attended the milestone event, which marks a major victory for national energy security.

The newly commissioned expansion will drastically increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 40000 barrels to 100000 barrels of crude oil per day. This massive upgrade means Ghana can now refine a huge portion of crude oil from our own Jubilee Oil Field.

Ambassador Cong Song explained that the strategy directly aligns with the national goal to end all raw mineral exports by 2030. By processing oil right here in Tema, the country will heavily reduce its expensive dependence on imported fuel and save billions in foreign exchange.

This massive petrochemical infrastructure stands as a solid symbol of Chinese investment in Ghana’s industrialization. The project successfully builds on a strategic agreement reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President John Dramani Mahama during their bilateral meeting in Beijing last October.

The Chinese embassy noted that their local enterprises remain highly confident in Ghana’s economic future. This partnership does not just stabilize the domestic market; it also creates highly skilled engineering and technical jobs for local youth within the petroleum value chain.

Beyond meeting our domestic fuel needs, the expanded Sentuo refinery will position Ghana as the leading petroleum refining hub across the West African sub region. Local production will soon support regional fuel supplies and boost our cross border trade power.

Adding real value to our crude oil is the ultimate way to achieve true economic transformation. With continuous institutional support, Ghana is steadily moving away from buying foreign fuel to supplying the rest of Africa.
