The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is intensifying its nationwide public education campaign on Ghana’s impending ban on polystyrene foam products as the January 1, 2027 implementation deadline approaches.
The campaign will run from October 26 to November 1, 2026, across five northern regions, with activities designed to educate the public about the planned ban and encourage a shift towards more environmentally friendly alternatives.
According to the campaign plan, activities will include community durbars, a schools quiz competition and a university debate. These engagements are expected to provide platforms for discussions on the environmental impact of polystyrene foam products and the need for responsible waste management.
Polystyrene foam, commonly associated with disposable food containers and packaging materials, can contribute to plastic pollution when improperly discarded. Its lightweight nature also makes it difficult to manage once it enters the environment.
Through the campaign, the EPA aims to raise public awareness and prepare businesses, traders, food vendors, students and consumers for the upcoming implementation of the ban.
The outreach to the five northern regions forms part of broader efforts to ensure that communities across Ghana understand the policy before the deadline.
With January 1, 2027 approaching, public education and stakeholder cooperation will be important to support compliance and reduce the environmental challenges associated with polystyrene foam waste.
