The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, says the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has served the party diligently and qualifies to contest for the presidency if he decides to pursue the position.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, November 3, Mr Kwetey said there was nothing wrong with Mr Asiedu Nketia seeking the country’s highest political office.
“It shouldn’t be a problem at all. I mean, he qualifies to run for president,” he said.
Mr Kwetey pointed to the NDC chairman’s long years of service and leadership within the party, arguing that his experience at the highest levels should not prevent him from seeking the presidency.
“Of course. I mean, he has served the party diligently. I mean, at the highest level, if he wants to go for it, why not?” he added.
Kwetey says he is not endorsing any candidate
Despite his comments about Mr Asiedu Nketia’s qualification, the NDC General Secretary stopped short of endorsing him for the party’s next presidential flagbearer position.
He explained that his responsibility was to strengthen the party and ensure that all prospective aspirants had a fair opportunity to contest.
Mr Kwetey stressed that the decision on who should lead the NDC into the next general election must be made by party members rather than individual leaders.
“For me, it’s not about support,” he said, adding that his role was to create a fair playing field for everyone.
He maintained that the eventual choice would rest with the party’s membership.
Asiedu Nketia’s possible presidential ambition
Mr Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, has held several senior positions in the NDC, including General Secretary and National Chairman.
He has not formally declared his intention to contest the party’s next presidential flagbearer election. However, speculation about his possible bid has grown following his decision not to seek re-election as National Chairman in the party’s 2026 national executive elections.
The discussion comes as the NDC considers its next presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general election.
For now, Mr Kwetey says the party must allow all interested and qualified aspirants to make their case, with the final decision left to the members of the NDC.
