A major disaster hit the Java Sea when a massive fire broke out on the Mutiara Sentosa 2. The passenger ferry was on its regular route from Surabaya to Makassar when things went terribly wrong. Thick black smoke forced panicked passengers in orange life jackets to crowd the decks, and some even jumped into the sea to escape the intense heat.
The fire reportedly started early in the morning, between 6:00 and 7:00 am, when the ship was sailing in the waters north of Sumenep, Madura. The massive Ro-Ro ferry, measuring 160 meters long, was carrying hundreds of people. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the situation quickly turned critical as smoke engulfed the vessel.

Thankfully, help arrived. The local search and rescue teams (Basarnas), along with several nearby ships like the tugboat TB Hasnur 26 and the cargo ship KM Meratus Pematang Siantar, rushed to the scene. According to official reports from Basarnas Surabaya, rescue operations successfully pulled over 220 survivors from the burning ship and the surrounding waters.
Tragically, not everyone made it out. Authorities have confirmed that at least four people lost their lives in the disaster. The exact number of people originally on board has been difficult to pin down, leading to initial confusion about missing passengers, though the focus remains entirely on getting survivors safely to Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya.
This incident has raised serious questions about maritime safety and emergency response times in the region. The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has stepped in, stating that their priority is the safety of the passengers and crew, and a full investigation into what caused the Mutiara Sentosa 2 to go up in flames is already underway.
