Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has openly rejected proposals allowing all card-bearing members to vote in presidential and parliamentary primaries. He described the recent directive by the Supreme Court as completely unrealistic for real political party operations.
Speaking on Channel One News, Blay argued that outsider observers do not fully understand the heavy logistics behind running internal party elections. He explained that gathering millions of voters, printing massive ballot papers, and organizing nationwide polling centers requires huge financial resources that political parties simply cannot sustain easily.
The veteran politician also dismissed claims that opening primaries to every registered member will automatically eliminate corruption. He pointed out that when the National Democratic Congress previously expanded voter participation in their internal elections, allegations of financial influence and vote buying still continued.
Blay further warned that expanding voting rights creates serious security risks for major political parties. He explained that rival political organizations could easily infiltrate open voting registers, destabilizing internal democracy and spoiling candidate selection.
While the government accepted the apex court directive as part of ongoing constitutional reforms, Blay insists that true democratic growth requires experienced management rather than hasty structural shifts. Political analysts across Ghana expect heated debates to continue as parties prepare to restructure their internal voting rules.
