The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is currently very unhappy about how some judges are treating their precious rest period. The association has officially sent a strong appeal to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie. They want him to strictly enforce the traditions of the annual legal vacation.
Lawyers across the country truly deserve a break after wearing their heavy wigs and gowns all year round. The legal vacation normally gives them time to rest their brains and spend quality time with their families. But it seems some bold judges want to keep the courtrooms busy even during the holiday season.
The main trouble started when several top law firms began complaining bitterly to the association leadership. These firms properly notified the courts that their lawyers would definitely not be available during the vacation weeks. Surprisingly some judges completely ignored these official notices and issued fresh directives.
The judges confidently ordered the lawyers to appear in court for various part heard criminal cases. Even the legal team defending former National Signals Bureau boss Adu Boahen received these unexpected court orders. You can imagine the frustration of a lawyer who has already packed their bags for a nice holiday getaway. Lawyers are Complaining about his to the GBA.
The GBA believes this new trend seriously threatens the well being of legal practitioners in Ghana. They argue that working without proper rest easily leads to total burnout and poor health. Nobody wants a tired lawyer defending them in a complicated criminal case.
Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie now has the tough job of bringing peace between the angry lawyers and the hardworking judges. The legal community eagerly waits for his final word on this heated vacation dispute and would ant to hear anything less positive from the GBA. We all hope he finds a logical balance so justice continues smoothly without destroying the health of our brilliant lawyers.
