The Ghana Navy has intercepted two wooden boats carrying 117 sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp at the Ada Estuary following an operation on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The consignment, weighing approximately 4.7 tonnes, is estimated to have a street value exceeding US$1 million.
According to the Ghana Navy, the suspects abandoned the boats and their cargo after noticing naval personnel pursuing them. They reportedly fled the scene, leaving the substances behind.
Preliminary intelligence suggests that the consignment was being transported out of Ghana, raising concerns about the use of the country’s waterways for suspected drug trafficking activities.
Ghana Navy intercepts two wooden boats
The interception involved two wooden boats transporting 117 sacks of the suspected narcotic substance through the Ada Estuary.
The operation forms part of efforts by the Ghana Navy and other security agencies to prevent criminal networks from using Ghana’s waterways to move illicit substances.
Although the suspects managed to escape, naval personnel successfully secured the boats and recovered the suspected drugs.
The estimated street value of more than US$1 million makes the seizure a significant development in the country’s fight against drug trafficking.
Security agencies intensify operations along waterways
The operation highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to strengthen surveillance and security along Ghana’s inland waterways.
The Ghana Navy has been working with other security institutions to monitor suspicious movements and prevent the transportation of prohibited substances through the country’s rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
Preliminary intelligence gathered after the interception indicates that the consignment may have been intended for transportation outside Ghana. However, the intended destination has not been officially confirmed.
Navy calls for public cooperation
The Ghana Navy has emphasised the importance of cooperation between security agencies and local communities in combating criminal activities along the country’s waterways.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious movements, particularly activities involving unusual boat movements and the transportation of unidentified goods.
Community cooperation, combined with intelligence gathering and regular patrols, remains important in identifying and disrupting suspected drug trafficking operations.
Suspects remain at large
The suspects involved in the Ada Estuary operation reportedly escaped after sighting the pursuing naval personnel.
The two wooden boats and their cargo were subsequently recovered by the Navy.
The interception adds to efforts by Ghana’s security agencies to prevent the country’s waterways from becoming transit routes for illicit substances.
The Ghana Navy continues to strengthen its operations to protect Ghana’s territorial waters and inland waterways while supporting the broader national fight against drug trafficking.
The investigation is expected to establish further details about the origin, intended destination and individuals connected to the seized consignment.
