For many years, Ghana watched its precious yellow metal leave the shores as raw ore while other nations enjoyed the real profits. That painful routine is finally changing for good. The Ghana Gold Board has successfully refined nearly nine tonnes of gold right here inside the country this year.
Speaking at the National Mining Dialogue in Accra, GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi shared the exciting update. He explained that this smart move creates solid local jobs and keeps important refining fees within our domestic economy. Instead of exporting raw minerals for others to process, Ghana is choosing to retain the actual value of its natural resources.
Sammy Gyamfi stressed that our economic story must change through aggressive local ownership and value addition. For generations, foreign entities controlled the financing, refining, and downstream services of our mining sector. Ghana established GoldBod to bring transparency and heavy local participation back into the gold trade, especially for small scale miners.
The good news does not stop at local refining alone because big projects are already rolling out. GoldBod is partnering with private investors to establish the Ghana Gold Village to support local jewellery manufacturing and enterprise growth. Additionally, a new gold tokenisation programme will launch in 2027 to allow everyday citizens with modest funds to buy fractional gold investments.
Large scale mining companies are also joining this massive transformation journey. Starting from July first, the state requires all gold acquired from big mining firms for national reserves to undergo local refining. By owning more and processing more locally, Ghana is finally building a wealthy industrial future for its people.
