The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns regarding the financial operations of the Ghana Gold Board known as GoldBod. Speaking to journalists on August 18 2026 Minority Leader Alexander AfenyoMarkin accused the institution of using the Bank of Ghana as an alter ego to hide massive financial losses. He argued that shifting heavy business burdens onto the central bank makes trading books look clean while citizens suffer the actual consequences.
This explosive revelation follows an August report released by the International Monetary Fund highlighting the domestic gold purchase scheme. According to the IMF data the program recorded financial shortfalls exceeding one billion seven hundred million dollars throughout the previous year. That staggering deficit translates to about one point five percent of Ghana gross domestic product which creates deep economic anxiety for everyone.
AfenyoMarkin strongly questioned how GoldBod can proudly take full credit for foreign exchange gains while running away from associated costs. Using another state institution to absorb heavy operational shocks deceives the public and distorts proper accountability standards. Leaders cannot privatize commercial glory while socializing massive deficits onto the national treasury without facing critical questions.
Government and management must step forward immediately to explain these troubling gaps before things spiral completely out of hand. Public finances require absolute transparency so that ordinary citizens understand how national resources are managed. Ignoring these red flags could plunge the economy into deeper crises sooner than expected.
