Ghana’s government just turned down a GH¢20 million donation from telecom giant MTN Ghana. MTN pledged the funds to assist Ghanaians returning home from violent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. However, official state representatives respectfully declined the offer, confirming that full emergency funding is already secured.
Our citizens faced horrific beatings and fatalities during the recent unrest down south. Government officials made it clear that protecting Ghanaian lives isn’t a transactional matter. This situation is strictly about demanding justice and total accountability, not accepting corporate cash donations as a quick band-aid.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that public tax money already covers the complete evacuation and local reintegration of all returnees. State agencies are fully handling the safety, housing, and social resettlement of our returning brothers and sisters.
While MTN meant well with their corporate intervention, state leadership refuses to reduce human rights violations to financial payouts. Real corporate responsibility requires standing up against violence, while the state handles emergency relief efforts independently. Our national dignity and citizen safety will always remain far more valuable than any bank transfer.
