Law enforcement agencies in Ghana are changing their strategies as human trafficking rapidly moves online. Cyber criminals are now abandoning traditional recruitment tactics to exploit digital platforms, romance scams, and fake job advertisements.
Speaking at the World Day Against Trafficking event, Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, warned that criminal networks use smartphones, social media, and encrypted messaging apps to target vulnerable people. Fake offers for overseas employment, scholarships, and domestic work are increasingly luring victims into forced labor and sexual exploitation.
In response, the CID is combining traditional policing techniques with modern digital intelligence and international information sharing. Security forces continue to track down perpetrators who trick victims with promises of good jobs in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East.
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Naa Momo Lartey, reaffirmed the government’s total commitment to stopping human trafficking. She encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious online job offers or individuals to law enforcement authorities immediately.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Immigration Service has achieved major operational success against human trafficking syndicates. Deputy Comptroller General Faisal Disu revealed that the Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons Unit rescued over 400 victims and arrested 29 suspects between January and July 2026.
Recent targeted operations on July 26 and 27 resulted in the rescue of 172 victims, comprising 79 males and 93 females, alongside the arrest of 17 additional suspects. Courts have already convicted ten human trafficking perpetrators, sending eight to prison for sentences ranging between seven and eight years.
