Ghanaian twin brothers Jamal Abubakari, popularly known as Arrangement, and Kamal Abubakari, also known as Lancaster, have pleaded guilty in the United States to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with an international romance scam that defrauded victims of more than US$9 million.

The brothers are currently in custody and are scheduled to be sentenced on February 9, 2027. Each faces a maximum possible prison sentence of 20 years, although the final punishment will be determined by the court.

As part of their plea agreements, the twins have also agreed to forfeit jewellery seized by investigators during their arrests, including luxury watches, rings, chains, medallions and earrings.

How the US$9 Million Romance Scam Worked

According to US prosecutors, the fraud scheme involved the use of fake identities to establish romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims through online platforms.

The suspects and their alleged associates reportedly gained the trust of victims before using fabricated stories to persuade them to send money.

The scheme targeted victims in the United States and other countries, causing financial losses exceeding US$9 million.

Romance scams often involve fraudsters pretending to be romantic partners before requesting money for emergencies, business opportunities, medical expenses or other fabricated situations.

Investigators say the case involved an international network, with money transferred through financial accounts connected to people involved in the alleged scheme.

Twins Agree to Forfeit Luxury Jewellery

In addition to pleading guilty, Jamal and Kamal Abubakari have agreed to surrender jewellery confiscated during their arrests.

The items include luxury watches, rings, chains, medallions and earrings.

The forfeiture forms part of the legal proceedings connected to the case and allows the authorities to pursue the property covered by the plea agreements.

The brothers remain in custody as they await sentencing.

Prison Sentence Expected in February 2027

The twins are expected to appear before the court on February 9, 2027, for sentencing.

Although the charge carries a maximum possible prison term of 20 years, this does not mean they will automatically receive the maximum sentence. The judge will determine the appropriate punishment after considering the relevant legal factors.

The case has drawn attention to the growing threat of online fraud and the way criminal networks can use digital platforms to target victims across international borders.

International Cooperation in the Investigation

The case involved cooperation between US law enforcement agencies and Ghanaian authorities.

Investigators worked to establish the alleged fraud network, trace financial transactions and gather evidence for prosecution.

The cooperation highlights the importance of international law enforcement partnerships in investigating crimes that cross national boundaries.

Public Urged to Be Careful With Online Relationships

The case also serves as a warning to people who develop romantic relationships online.

Members of the public are encouraged to verify the identities of people they meet online and avoid sending money to individuals they have never met or independently verified.

Requests for urgent financial assistance, investment transfers or payments to unfamiliar accounts should be treated with caution.

As the Abubakari brothers await sentencing, the case highlights the serious legal consequences associated with international fraud and the financial harm online scams can cause to victims and their families.
