The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced plans to establish a dedicated sports centre and introduce regular health walks as part of efforts to improve the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of its employees.
The announcement was made during a health and awareness walk held simultaneously in Tema and Takoradi to officially launch activities marking the authority’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The event brought together management, staff, retirees, their families, union executives, and members of the GPHA community. Participants joined the walk to promote healthy living while celebrating four decades of the authority’s contribution to Ghana’s maritime sector.
Speaking after the walk at the Junior Club House in Tema Community Two, the Director of Port, Tema, Mr. Tebon Zumah, praised employees and retirees for their strong participation and commitment throughout the event.
He thanked staff for their dedication over the past 40 years and said their hard work had helped build public confidence in Ghana’s ports while supporting national trade and economic growth.
According to Mr. Zumah, management is considering making the health walk a permanent activity on the authority’s annual calendar because of its positive impact on staff health and team spirit.
He explained that regular physical activity helps reduce stress, improves fitness, and strengthens relationships among employees, creating a healthier and more productive workplace.
As part of the anniversary plans, GPHA also intends to establish a dedicated sports centre where employees can participate in fitness programmes, sporting activities, and other wellness initiatives throughout the year.
Mr. Zumah said the proposed sports facility would provide workers with a permanent place to exercise and engage in recreational activities that promote healthier lifestyles.
He noted that investing in employee wellbeing is important because healthy workers are more motivated, productive, and able to deliver quality services.
The Director of Port encouraged all employees to remain committed to excellence in their duties so the ports of Tema and Takoradi can continue strengthening their reputation as efficient and competitive gateways for trade in West Africa.
He added that maintaining high standards of service is essential to supporting Ghana’s economy and attracting more international shipping business.
Meanwhile, in Takoradi, the Director of Port, Captain James Richmond Quayson, described the anniversary as an important milestone in the history of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
He said the celebration marks the merger that created the modern GPHA and provides an opportunity to reflect on the institution’s achievements over the past four decades.
Captain Quayson praised the efforts of former and current employees whose dedication has helped transform Ghana’s ports into important centres for regional and international trade.
He also encouraged staff to continue working together to improve efficiency, customer service, and operational performance.
The 40th anniversary celebrations will include several activities aimed at recognising the contributions of employees while promoting teamwork and community engagement.
Management believes programmes such as health walks and sporting activities will strengthen relationships among workers and create a more positive working environment.
Employee wellness has become an important priority for many organisations as studies continue to show that healthy workers are more productive and experience lower levels of stress and illness.
GPHA says the planned sports centre forms part of its long term commitment to creating a supportive workplace where employees have opportunities to improve both their physical and mental health.
The authority also hopes the facility will encourage greater participation in sports competitions and recreational activities among staff and retirees.
Over the years, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has played a major role in facilitating international trade by managing the country’s key seaports at Tema and Takoradi.
These ports handle millions of tonnes of cargo annually and serve as important entry and exit points for goods destined for Ghana and neighbouring countries.
As GPHA celebrates its 40th anniversary, management says it remains focused on improving operational efficiency while also investing in the welfare of its workforce.
Officials believe initiatives such as regular health walks and the planned sports centre will contribute to a healthier, more united workforce capable of supporting the authority’s long term growth and maintaining Ghana’s position as a leading maritime hub in the region.
