Commuters across Accra and other major cities in Ghana can finally take a breath as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union commands commercial drivers to revert unapproved fare increases immediately. The directives came after widespread complaints from passengers who noticed trotro drivers charging higher prices without official authorization.
Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, confirmed that the transport union has not approved any fare adjustment. He made it clear that any driver charging higher prices is violating the official agreement reached with the Ministry of Transport.
Chaley, life is already tough for everyone, so seeing drivers add extra money on top of transport fares without approval made many commuters very angry. The union explained that even though fuel costs and spare parts remain high, drivers cannot just wake up and change the fares on their own without following proper consultation channels.
During their last official meeting with government stakeholders, transport operators agreed to suspend the planned fare increases after the President removed the GH¢2 levy from diesel fuel. The union decided to monitor fuel prices until the end of the month before deciding on any official review.
GPRTU leadership warns that task forces will monitor loading parks and bus stops to enforce compliance. Commuters are advised to continue paying the old approved transport fares while the union and government work together to finalize official fare decisions.
