COPEC requests that GPRTU examine the suggested 30% fare increase

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has urged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to reconsider its proposed 30 percent transport fare increase. Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, July 27, 2026, COPEC Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah stated that while driver operational costs have risen, a 30 percent jump will place an unbearable burden on everyday commuters.

This timely intervention offers massive relief to millions of workers and families who worry about rising daily travel expenses across Ghanaian towns and cities.

Duncan Amoah explained that average petrol prices have returned to around GH¢14.40 per litre, matching levels recorded before current market changes. He recalled that back in August 2025, commercial transport operators listened to COPEC’s appeal and reduced fares by nearly 15 percent when fuel prices dropped.

Because fuel prices have rebounded to those earlier figures, driver unions rightfully hold valid grounds to request a fair price review. However, jumping straight to a 30 percent hike punishes the ordinary passenger unnecessarily during tough economic times.

COPEC recommends that transport unions reduce their target to a reasonable 15 or 20 percent increase instead. Reaching a middle ground ensures commercial drivers recover their operational expenses while keeping daily public transport affordable for all passengers.

GPRTU leadership confirmed that the 30 percent figure serves as an initial discussion proposal rather than a final decision. Driver executives cite high costs of spare parts, insurance premiums, and vehicle maintenance alongside fuel prices as key reasons for seeking an upward adjustment.

Duncan Amoah expressed hope that government policy interventions will quickly reduce financial pressure on commercial transport operators. Suppressing unnecessary fuel taxes and lowering vehicle import duties can easily stabilize transport charges for long periods.
