The Black Queens of Ghana suffered a painful exit from WAFCON 2026 after losing 2 to 1 against tournament debutants Malawi in the quarterfinals. This unexpected result shocked football supporters across the nation who expected a smooth ride into the semifinals.
Ghana started the match with great energy and took an early lead in the seventh minute through a neat strike from Chantelle Boye Hlorkah. However, Malawi refused to give up and equalised in the twenty seventh minute through star forward Temwa Chawinga.
The second half brought pure heartbreak for Ghanaian fans watching at home and in the stands. Doris Boaduwaa thought she had restored Ghana lead with a fine goal, but a video assistant referee review ruled it out. Malawi took full advantage of that emotional blow and secured their winning goal through Rose Smith Kadzere in the seventy ninth minute.
This quarterfinal defeat means Ghana missed out on automatic qualification for the 2027 Women World Cup in Brazil. It is a bitter pill to swallow because the squad possessed enough talent to go all the way in Morocco.
Fortunately, the dream is not completely over for the Black Queens. The team still has a second chance to qualify for the World Cup through a high stakes playoff eliminator against Ivory Coast.
Ghanaian fans are disappointed, but the players must clear their heads quickly. If the team fixes their defensive lapses and stays focused in front of goal, they can still secure that precious World Cup ticket.
