The Forum for Kidney Patients Association Ghana has sent an urgent cry for help to the government, benevolent individuals, and corporate bodies. The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) is currently facing a massive health crisis that directly threatens the lives of over 100 kidney patients.
As the only public dialysis centre in the entire Central Region, CCTH is under incredible pressure every single day. Patients travel all the way from the Western, Eastern, and even Ashanti regions just to get treatment. However, the hospital currently operates with only five functioning dialysis machines to serve everyone.
Because the machines are so few, doctors have to cut down treatment time drastically. Patients now receive only two hours per session instead of the recommended four hours of Kidney treaement. This dangerous shortcut leaves harmful toxins in their bodies. The President of the association, Mr Baffour Kojo Ahinkra, revealed that you can literally smell urea in the breath of some patients because their blood is not being filtered properly.
To help reduce the pain, the association recently stepped up and donated essential medical consumables, including disposable bloodlines and dialysis powder. This kind gesture will help engineers restore two out-of-use machines. However, temporary donations cannot solve this huge problem permanently.
Government and private investors must step in quickly to establish more dialysis centres in the region. Our brothers and sisters in Cape Coast deserve proper healthcare and a real fighting chance to live.
